Novel Diagnostic Tool For Generalized Intestinal Disorders in Broilers

Nutreco’s Poultry Research Centre (PRC) has evaluated the perspectives of a new diagnostic tool for microflora disorders in broilers. PRC collaborated with a DNA laboratory in the Netherlands to analyse intestinal samples from a series of broiler farms with good or poor health status. The analytical results give, in one integrated picture, the composition of the whole microflora (including the species that cannot be cultured in the laboratory). With innovative methods for data interpretation (multivariate analysis) the microflora profile was compared with the health status.

Further studies are planned with the research partners to calibrate the system for a wider range of potential health problems and to create a large enough dataset of flora profiles to be able to ´type´ flocks and determine risk factors for intestinal disorders. When this is established, the technique may be used to advise farmers which Greenline TN mix should be used and/or management measures should be taken, to prevent future intestinal health problems.

Special Feed Boosts Young Chicks

Working in close co-operation with field nutritionists, Trouw Nutrition’s Poultry Research Centre has developed a special feed for newly hatched chicks.

The new feed provides the chicks with nutrition and water without making them wet, which could jeopardize the chicks’ ability to survive.

The product is convenient to use and provides the young animals with a valuable boost at the earliest stage. The development of the feed’s innovative production technique was made possible through close co-operation with other parties.

Experimental and field trials show excellent results. This product will become commercially available in the course of 2002.
