Food2Feed Quality

With the world population growing rapidly, and raw materials becoming more scarce, treating by-products from the food- and beverage industry as a viable, nutritious source of energy for animals is gaining attention. However, preserving by-products can present multiple challenges, which means that significant volumes still end up as landfill waste or in biogas production. Since raw materials and final feeds need to provide stable nutritional levels, the demand for ways to effectively preserve the nutritional quality of food by-products for use in feed continues to increase.

Sustainable alternative

Pressure is mounting to address the challenge of feeding an additional two billion people on our planet by 2050. At the same time, according to FAO, one-third – or 1.3 billion tons – of food produced is currently wasted and lost in the global food chain. In addition to a tremendous economic cost, this comes with significant environmental and energy implications. Reducing food waste is high on the agenda of FAO, governments and the food industry.

Sustainability goals and raw material scarcity are triggering the food industry to seek alternative waste management solutions. Trouw Nutrition offers solutions to help the industry use resources more efficiently and move towards a circular economy. Our integrated approach, combining knowledge, services and products, is effective in helping preserve the nutritional value of by-products to be used as feed ingredients, to replace restrained natural resources or ingredients that could otherwise supplement direct human nutrition.

Preserving nutritional value

Controlling the level of microorganisms, such as yeast, mould and enterobacteria, is of critical importance to meeting GMP+ standards and enabling farmers to use by-products. Providing effective preservation while maintaining nutritional value is key to utilising these by-products in the most efficient way. Trouw Nutrition offers extensive knowledge and analytical services to support food producers in determining the microbial pressure and defining the most impactful treatment solutions. We offer effective treatment with Revalet®, an innovative feed additive solution that can be applied in-line when by-products are leaving the production process, before entering storage tanks. We install state-of-the-art dosing equipment as part of the solution, to allow for safe, accurate, effective and fully automated application of Revalet® that completely eliminates human error once settings are implemented correctly.

Liquid feeding

Liquid feeding systems for pigs have become popular in many European countries and are emerging in other countries around the globe. This method of feeding involves computer-controlled feed production, mixing dry ingredients with either ethanol, water, brewing or other food industry liquid by-products. Re-using food by-products enables swine farmers to produce high-quality protein in a sustainable and cost-effective way. However, once mixing occurs, microbial proliferation begins. Harmful microbes such as yeasts, moulds and enterobacteria thrive in high-moisture feed, and, if not controlled, can cause nutritional losses and impact animal health. Trouw Nutrition offers integrated solutions that include on-farm support, microbial analysis, advice on effective treatment solutions, and treatment of residue in liquid feeding systems. We can also install dosing equipment to allow for safe and accurate dosing.
