Salmonella Control Programme

Untitled design (79).png

Salmonella affects performance, animal health and food safety. In order to comply with legal and commercial standards, its prevalence needs to be minimized as early as possible in the production chain.

Selko offers customers an integrated and holistic approach focusing on feed, farm, and health aspects provides a solid basis to protect animals from Salmonella colonization and invasion and reduces its horizontal and vertical transmission through the entire production chain.

A customized & integrated approach

Feed

Salmonella can be easily introduced into the feed by contaminated ingredients, sub-optimal processing, and sub-hygienic transport, storage, distribution, and administration. Organic acid-based feed additives can improve feed hygiene and reduce the risk of recontamination.

Salmonella-free feed is a critical step to ensure safe food

Farm

Salmonella can be introduced and spread not only through feed but also through drinking water. Reducing water’s microbiological load and preventing biofilm formation in the water lines are therefore highly advisable.
Acidification with organic acids reduces the pH of the drinking water and supports water hygiene in the presence or absence of chlorine.

Premium water quality is a pre-requisite for efficient Salmonella control on the farm

Health

The factors that affect the ability of Salmonella to colonise are complex and diverse. An efficient Salmonella control concept looks beyond feed and/or water acidification and empowers the natural defense mechanisms in the intestinal tract of the birds.

Strengthening the bird's natural defence mechanisms reduces the horizontal and vertical transmission of Salmonella

"An integrated approach focusing on feed and farm and health management can protect birds from Salmonella colonization and invasion, lower Salmonella pressure in processing and support farmers' feed-to-food safety efforts."
Bart D'Heer, Global Programme Manager Salmonella Control

Knowhow

In our Salmonella Competence Center, there we combine all knowledge from internal and external experts and put this into practice. Together with our customers, we monitor the progress of Salmonella prevention plan. In addition to that, we provide training of personnel on site and inside related to hygiene and management procedures at all critical stages of the production process.

Services

Feed and water additives, proper vaccination schemes, and accurate medication programmes can all contribute to a lower Salmonella prevalence. However, there is no silver bullet. The implementation and application of potent products should always be backed up by and in line with a proper risk analysis, a solid sampling and analysis plan, and premium hygienic practices.

Selko' Salmonella scan focuses on this sampling, serotyping, and benchmarking. It is crucial to identify critical control points and the relevant Salmonella serotypes. It establishes the dynamics of the Salmonella contamination within the production chain, and it provides the basis for our customized and integrated control programme.

Products

Feed and/or drinking water additives can complicate the colonization and invasion process of Salmonella.
Low pKa SCFA’s (delivered via feed or drinking water) can strengthen the low pH barrier of the upper and the mucosal barrier in the lower gut. High pKa SCFA’s and MCFA’s can contribute to a more challenging condition in the non-acidic part of the intestinal tract. Non-digestible oligosaccharides can generate a prebiotic effect and by that contribute to a more competitive microbiota. Specific oligosaccharides show a high binding affinity for Salmonella fimbriae and by that reduce their intestinal colonization. Specific SCFA’s and MCFA’s can downregulate the virulence of Salmonella and by that reduce their intestinal invasion.

Empowering the animal’s internal defense mechanisms with specific feed and water additives generates an additional hurdle that complicates the colonization and transmission of Salmonella and completes an integrated control from feed to food.
