Keeping cows healthy after calving is not easy!

Calving is a very stressful time for both the animal and the farmer. The metabolic changes that occur around calving lead to a significant drop in dry matter intake (DMI) and suppressed DMI is a major factor in the incidence of early lactation metabolic disease.

A dairy cow does not eat and drink in the period directly before and during calving. She does however, lose large amounts of water and electrolytes and her blood calcium level goes down.

This can make the animal lethargic, resulting in a further reduction of dry matter intake.

A challenge faced by all cows post calving is negative energy balance (NEB). They require five times the normal amount of calcium in the short term. If the cow cannot meet this high calcium requirement on its own, the animals are at risk of developing milk fever. It is therefore important for the animal to increase its dry matter intake as soon as possible.

New research shows the comparison of bolus and Farm-O-San Reviva

This graphic compares the use of a calcium bolus (Ca-Bolus), Farm-O-San Reviva and a control group (CON) after birth. With the bolus, it is clearly visible that the calcium content in the blood increases most rapidly but also falls to its lowest level after 24 hours. This means that although the bolus takes effect very quickly, the cows fall into a "calcium slump" again after 24 hours. With Farm-O-San Reviva the calcium content increases evenly and reaches its highest calcium level after 24 hours, which remains at its highest level 48 hours after birth.
